Obelisk's Are Still Around

The Washington Monument is a great example of an obelisk
You probably think that obelisks are ancient and they don't exist anymore.  If you thought that you would be wrong.  Although obelisks were made in Egypt few of the original pillars remain in Egypt.  Many have been moved to different countries and different cities.  Rome now has 13 obelisks that is more than any other city in the world.  There are obelisks in Paris, London and even New York City.  The most famous obelisk in the U.S. is the Washington Monument.  As you can see obelisks are very important to the Egyptians.

If They Didn't Make the Obelisk Stationary It Would Fall

If they didn't make the obelisk stationary it would be a lot of work for nothing.  After traveling several miles through the Nile they had to be put some where.  Most obelisks were placed in pairs in front off a temple.  A ramp was prepared in advance and the pillar was pulled onto it.  The ramp was very unique.  It was like a funnel shaped hole that was filled with sand.  When the obelisk was where they wanted it to be they removed the sand.  That made the pillar lower into place.
This is an obelisk that had to be made stationary so it didn't fall

How Would They Even Transport A 200 Ton Thing?

This is a picture of what a boat to transport obelisks would look like
Try carrying a 200 ton obelisk a long way...um not going to happen.  The Egyptians were very smart so they found a way to transport it.  The obelisk was placed on a heavy sledge.  Then several thousand sweaty men pulled it all the way to the banks of the Nile River.  Then little ships called vessels carried the obelisk to its destination.  Then the obelisk needed to be planted somewhere.  You could see that the Egyptian people were smart since they didn't try to carry it all the way.

How Did People Make These Huge Beasts?

This is a obelisk that had almost been cut out of a quarry
Well... it involved tons of help.  Some obelisks were cut from single blocks of granite.  So it would take forever!  The others were made from Quartzite or Basalt.  They used stone from a quarry.  The most popular carving spot for obelisks in the Imperial Period was the Aswan Quarry.  Almost all of the obelisks had inscriptions of Hieroglyphics.  That is a lot of writing considering that the tallest obelisk still standing is 105 feet.  After the obelisk was carved to satisfaction it had to be transported.  They usually transported them to be in pairs in front of a temple

What The Heck is an Obelisk?

This is an obelisk
I'm guessing that you don't even know what an obelisk is.  First things first an obelisk is a four sided monument with a top that is shaped like a pyramid.  A good example of an obelisk is the Washington Monument in Washington D.C.  The obelisk was used as religious symbols in Ancient Egypt.  They are also considered sacred to the Egyptian solar gods and goddesses because each day the first sun rays were reflected from their pyramid shaped tops.  They were dedicated to the Sun god.  You may think that they are dumb but they were very important to the Ancient Egyptians.  They even worshiped them because they thought a god or spirit had inherited them.  I think it would be extremely weird if I saw people bowing down in front of a statue, but... okay.  It is also believed that there were two obelisks in every age, two in heaven and two on Earth. You may still not respect the obelisk but you should because they are extremely important to Ancient Egyptians.
